Nobody was afraid of going to war to expand their powers at the expense of others. In the 1800's nationalism also led to a crisis in south-eastern Europe in the region known as the Balkans. Imperialism had convinced the major powers to build empires. Nationalism ran counter on imperialism. Groups began to press for independence as nationalism spread. Among the groups pushing for independence were the Serbs, Bosnians, Croats, and Slovenes.
